I learned that the koala has a gestation period of 35 days. Then the newborn wriggles its way from the birth canal to the mother's pouch, where it clamps onto a teat for the next 3 months. After that, it suckles occasionally for another 3 months. The mother's anus provides access to a special soft pap that the infant eats which contains the bacteria necessary to metabolize eucalyptus. And, thus, the circle of life continues for another million generations of bacteria.
