We stayed at the "Gone Walkabout" hostel. "Backpacker friendly" as they say. In Australia (and Europe, too, I think) a "backpacker" is someone traveling cheaply, usually with a backpack, mostly folks fresh out of college taking a last adventure before real life. It's a shame that the USA is so traveller-unfriendly! Hostels are much less common, and are mostly YHA with actual age limits and such. ("Youth hostels.") Anyway, I quite like the simplicity and efficiency of hostels. I don't like room service, and I do like wandering out to a picnic table and chatting with all the european college kids. And, tell me to "get civilized" if you like, but the occasional roach in my bed just doesn't bother me that much.
