Grand Canyon
2006 August 15, Tuesday
Moving water makes Natural History again.
Much in keeping with the trip in general, we fell into much luck on our
Grand Canyon visit. It was not high tourist season, so the place wasn't
teeming. It was pouring rain on the day we arrived, but stopped long enough
for us to appreciate some stunning views, and then to view an ahhh-worthy
sunset.
I loved seeing the Canyon on a stormy day. You could see the storms from the
distance, all blue and electric. There was a blanket of misty fog sunk into
the folds of the canyon, enhancing its mystery. It was amazingly easy to
disregard chatter.
We stayed the night, and started off B&E next morning on the South Kaibab
Trail. The weather was clear, cool, and perfect. Everything was bright and
washed clean by the previous day's rain. It was a lovely morning's hike.
To think we considered skipping GC just because we didn't have time to go to
the North Rim.
